There are 2 types of court for a lawsuit to be filed: Small Claims or Civil Court. If you’re seeking to recover $10K or less, your lawsuit will be filed in Small Claims Court. Anything over $10K is filed in Civil Court.
Small Claims – $375 (including Court Filing Fees)
Courts generally schedule a trial for your claim about 1 month after you file your complaint and serve the Defendant. The Court requires that you first send a demand letter to the Defendant before you may file a Small Claims lawsuit against them. You usually represent yourself in Small Claims court.

Civil Court – Starting at $1,500
Lawsuits filed in Civil Court are more technical and take more time to prepare, so the Court generally schedules trials 18 months or more after a complaint is filed. The Court permits lawyers to appear for all aspects of the case
